"We have a licence to be bolder than more institutional firms – which is fun!"

Simon Miller

Consultancy Director

Like many others in the sustainability sector, Simon’s route in was a little circuitous. He started out with a BSc Biology from the University of Bristol, before embarking on a two year teaching stint in rural Yamanashi, Japan. During that time – as a relative giant and local oddity – his reading extended to renewable energy which inspired him to enrol on the MSc Environmental Sustainability at the University of Edinburgh, near his home town of North Berwick.

Simon started his consulting career at AEAT where he worked on the Envirowise programme in which he became Key Account Manager of the Ecodesign sector. In his words, he ‘escaped’ to join Best Foot Forward in 2006 which at that time had a staff of just seven, and when the concepts of footprinting were still very much in their infancy. Simon has progressed to become Consultancy Director in which capacity he formulates much of the firm’s business development activities, manages a number of key accounts, and leads the consultancy team. He is an Associate Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment.

Simon has led the following projects:

  • Carbon footprinting of Radiohead’s US tours (and yes, he did meet the band)
  • Total carbon footprint of the UK rail industry for RSSB
  • Development of portfolio carbon footprinting techniques with PepsiCo
  • Product footprinting and strategy development for Ecover
  • Sustainability strategy development and product footprinting for Crown Paints
  • PAS2050 pilot carbon footprinting of Carling Lager for Molson Coors
  • Recommending sector-level resource efficient design interventions for WRAP

Simon lives within 500m of the office and swears by the occasional midday power nap to recharge the battery. If you’re meeting Simon, beware - he’s much taller than the photos suggest.

Simon is on LinkedIn and Twitter.
