"When we started in 1997 I never imagined that 10 years on the concepts we were pioneering would have such a widespread impact"

Craig Simmons

Innovation Director and Co-Founder

After more than 15 years in industry, working for technology giants such as IBM and Xerox, Craig co-founded Best Foot Forward in 1997 after a long and earnest chat with Nicky Chambers in the kitchen at a particularly good party.

Their mutual interest in the emerging science of footprinting and desire to use the concept to more effectively communicate business sustainability led to the naming of their new joint enterprise: Best Foot Forward. BFF became the first environmental consulting practice in Europe to focus on ecological footprinting and has continued to this day to lead in this area.

Craig’s technology background, coupled with degrees covering industrial psychology, statistics and computing, led naturally to Craig’s appointment as Innovation Director in charge of BFF’s software design and methodology development. Craig also project manages or provides technical leadership on many of BFF’s more challenging projects.

Craig has advised numerous national and international environmental bodies including the United Nations Environment Programme, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the Global Footprint Network, the World Resources Institute, the Carbon Trust, the European Environment Agency, and the European Commission Environment Directorate-General.

Craig has co-authored several environmental books, including 'Sharing Nature’s Interest', the award-winning 'ZEDbook' and 'The Green Guide for Business', and has contributed to many more as well as writing for the popular and technical press.

Craig has contributed to more BFF projects than he cares to list.

In his spare time, Craig enjoys slow cruising under sail and baking bagels (ideally at the same time).
