description
Description Regional Stepwise™ uses a component-based footprinting approach to calculate the ecological footprint of your community or region. The same data is also used to derive carbon dioxide emissions for a range of policy-relevant activities (for example, transport and construction). Regional Stepwise integrates into BFF's other services - such as Personal Stepwise. A standardised ecological footprint methodology is used which is compatible with the ‘gold standard’ national calculations summarised within the ‘Living Planet Report’ published by WWF. This methodology has been adopted by the European Commission as part of their European Common Indicators Project (see final report by Lewan and Simmons) and is being considered for adoption by the UK Audit Commission as part of their Quality of Life Indicator set. The results from Regional Stepwise can be benchmarked against a database of other regions worldwide. UK Cities, regions and nations that have been footprinted using Regional Stepwise include: North and North East Lincolnshire, Essex, Angus, Brechin, Scotland, Northern Ireland, English regions, Herefordshire, Oxfordshire, London, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Inverness and Wales. BFF products have also been widely used outside of the UK - predominantly in Europe (including France, Italy and Czech Republic). Interested in raising the profile of environmental issues in your area? To see how Regional Stepwise has been integrated into an innovative public education initiative, see the Angus case study. Another good example is the Greener Essex campaign which makes extensive use of ecological footprinting. LATEST NEWS: Concerned about how your local authority will meet its obligations under the new UK Sustainable Energy Act 2003 ? The Regional Stepwise service can assist by calculating the carbon emissions from residential accommodation. Energy scenarios can also be explored using the Regional Stepwise tool. [ back to the top ] Four steps to Determine Your Footprint 1. Complete a quotation form. Please request a form from BFF sales. Based on your quotation form, BFF will be able to provide a fixed price for the footprint analysis and report. 2. Send data to BFF You send your data (as indicated on the quotation form) to BFF. BFF will use their own database and experience to make approximations for data which cannot be accurately measured (or data which is too difficult or too costly to collect). BFF are also able to supply hardcopy and online forms to make public data collection more streamlined. Further guidance notes on data collection are available on request from BFF. 3. An ecological footprint report for your region is produced This enables you to understand the scale and distribution of the environmental impacts within your region (see a sample report). 4. Further analysis If you would like further input on prioritising areas for action, the footprint analysis can be further developed in a variety of ways - for example it can focus in on one policy area or be used to develop a range of scenarios.
