New staff & office move
Paul
Cooper (pictured left) has joined BFF as Managing Director, previously having been Unilever's Treasurer in Africa. Paul has taken over the
role of MD from Nicky, who has become Strategy Director. Paul will lead much of BFF's partnership work and also undertake some project management. In other staff news, Adam Lofts has joined our IT team and Richard Sheane (right) has started work as a consultant. Learn more on our staff profiles page.
Since our last newsletter we have also moved all of 100m to new office accommodation. The building - which underwent a low impact 'eco-refit' - provides a better working environment for staff and a dedicated training room
(which doubles as a table tennis and Wii venue!).

Ecover product footprint
Ecover is a leading company in the field of sustainability. They wanted to conduct a detailed environmental assessment of three of their best selling products: washing powder, washing-up liquid and toilet cleaner. Ecover
appointed BFF to undertake both ecological and carbon footprints of the
full product lifecycles including raw materials, manufacture and
distribution. BFF also delivered a sustainability report which put footprinting in context and identified other relevant
considerations for the company. Ecover feature on our case studies page.

Radiohead cut tour emissions In the music world there has been considerable debate over the environmental
impact of music bands jetting around the world on tour. Radiohead were
concerned about their activities, and commissioned BFF to footprint their tours in the US (lead singer Thom Yorke pictured right). The study, completed at the end of 2007, drew wide boundaries - including fans'
travel, merchandising, waste and energy use - and demonstrated that the
overriding impact is from the travel of thousands of fans to venues. Radiohead are
now taking steps to help their fans minimse travel emissions, as
well as reducing the band's own direct footprint. Their efforts have got considerable coverage in the mainstream media, for example: International Herald Tribune, The Guardian and The Mirror. Read the full report on the BFF website.

Tools:Event Footprinter September will see BFF launch an online tool which will enable events organisers to assess the total carbon footprint of their activities. The tool will account for all aspects of an event's impact - including areas such as audience travel, food consumption and the 'embodied carbon' in equipment. The tool builds on lessons learned through work with Radiohead (see above) and supplements recently launched Office and Furniture Footprinter tools.

Wine packaging analysis
The environmental impact of fast moving consumer goods packaging
is often scrutinised... As wine bottles are one of the heaviest packaging
items in the marketplace, some retailers are moving to PET plastic in an effort to reduce
product weight. Our work for WRAP assessed the carbon balance of glass
and PET bottles filled in the UK with bulk imported wine. There are a number of variables
which determine overall carbon efficiencies - all of which are detailed
in the publicly available report. Download the analysis from our website's case studies page.
|
Ofcom to tackle IT footprint BFF's recent analysis of Ofcom's activities has prompted the communications watchdog to target a large reduction in the
impact IT has on its carbon footprint. Ofcom features as a client case study on our new website.
