Chapter 3: Summary

Though ecological footprinting has only been around since 1990, 1 the foundations of the concept can be traced back through several threads of literature and research drawing on ecology, economics and geography.

A basic knowledge of some of the relevant issues within these disciplines is helpful, if not essential, to an understanding of the methodology itself.

In this chapter the authors present the key topics of land resources and carrying capacity, and introduce several other related ideas by way of brief summaries and references.
