New Footprint Standards Launched

The beautiful Italian village of Colle Val d'Elsa provided a perfect backdrop for the June 2006 launch of the first international Footprint Standards.

The Standards were the culmination of a consensus- driven, committee-based process organised and managed by the Global Footprint Network.

The main goal of the Standards is to ensure the continued development of the Footprint as a trusted, reliable sustainability measure.

Best Foot Forward, a founding member of the Global Footprint Network, is actively supporting the development of the Standards.

·  Masterclasses: Oxford & Edinburgh

Do you think that ecological footprint analysis is a bit of a 'black box'? After attending one of BFF's one day 'Masterclass' courses you will be able to calculate footprints and analyse lifestyles, regions and companies.

You will also learn about the new Footprint Standards 1.0 and new methodology developments.

Next courses are to be held in Oxford and Edinburgh in September and November respectively. The Scottish course is in collaboration with the Centre for Human Ecology.

·  Finland poised to adopt footprint

Natural Interest

Advanced news from Finnish delegates at the Siena Footprint Forum is that Finnish Government is poised to adopt the ecological footprint as a headline indicator.

Finnish local authorities have been using the footprint for some years and, last autumn, the first footprint consultancy Natural Interest Oy opened in the country in partnership with Best Foot Forward.

·  Regional Carbon Footprints

Best Foot Forward recently completed a project for the East Midlands Regional Assembly looking at both their current carbon dioxide emissions and the potential to source renewable energy locally.

The two studies, published in July 2006, provide benchmark data for all East Midland's local authorities and presents several sets of scenarios to 2050.

Eleven different renewable energy sources were investigated - from offshore wind to anaerobic digestion. For each, a maximum technical potential and accessible resource were calculated.
